 The Space

508 Davie St

The design of the Davie street Nuba takes its tone from the flux and flow of effervescent Yaletown, with its top tier restaurants, deluxe cocktail bars, exclusive boutiques and it’s endless parade of rare pets. The particular international air of the neighbourhood led us to think about the architecture of the new Middle Eastern metropolis. Nuba blends the ancient geometries of the madinah with the digital buzz of the 21st century city. The space had previously been a Blenz, so it required a lot of engineering to fit a full size restaurant into the space of a typical chain coffee shop. The layout had to be quite dense. But the ceiling, like in many newer commercial spaces, was two storeys high, with full-height glass on two sides. In order to bring definition to this cavernous space, and to help ward off the spatial vertigo endemic to this kind of room, overlapping ogival arches were employed to demarcate different areas and to ease the scale down to a human level.

The arches lend the room its structure and its identity, framing undulating wooden screens, psychedelic patterns painted on burlap, and various brass light fixtures, some imported, some DIY.
